What Your Child Will Learn
Many parents search for kids’ karate classes, and that is a great place to start. What your child actually learns at Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts goes further. Instead of a single style, children train in one integrated curriculum that combines Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Aikido, and Judo in every class.
There is nothing to choose and no separate schedules to juggle. Your child attends one class and builds striking, self-defense, balance, and grappling fundamentals together, the way Sr. GrandMaster Yu has taught them since 1994.
The Benefits of Martial Arts for Children
The proper physical and mental development of the child is the foundation of Sr. GrandMaster Yu’s children’s program. As children train, they become more disciplined while having fun, and parents consistently tell us they see the difference at home and at school.
Each achievement in our kids’ martial arts classes builds:
- Confidence and self-esteem through earned belt promotions and mastered skills
- Focus and mental acuity that carries into schoolwork
- Physical development, including coordination, balance, and flexibility
- Emotional stability and respect for themselves and others
Many parents of children with attention, sensory, or behavioral challenges tell us the structure and encouragement of our classes have helped their child become more focused, balanced, and confident.
What Happens During Your Child’s First Martial Arts Class?
Starting something new can feel exciting and a little intimidating for both children and parents. At Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts, we make every new student feel welcome from the moment they arrive.
During your child’s first class, they will:
- Meet our friendly instructors and classmates
- Learn basic martial arts stances and movements
- Practice simple kicking and striking techniques
- Develop balance and coordination through fun drills
- Learn safe falling techniques on our professional safety mats
- Experience the respectful traditions that are part of every class
Our instructors work with each child at their own pace, so no prior martial arts experience is necessary. The goal of the first class is to help your child feel comfortable, build confidence, and have fun while learning something new.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What styles of martial arts do children learn at Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts?
Children train in one combined curriculum that includes Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Aikido, and Judo, along with practical, age-appropriate self-defense. Rather than learning a single style, students build striking, balance, and grappling skills together in every class, with a strong foundation of discipline, focus, and respect.
How can martial arts benefit my child?
Martial arts improve physical fitness, coordination, balance, and flexibility while teaching life skills such as discipline, self-confidence, goal-setting, and respect for others. Many Oak Park parents also notice improvements in focus, schoolwork, and social skills within the first few months of training.
What happens at a free class observation?
You and your child visit our Oak Park studio during a regular class, watch Sr. GrandMaster Yu and his instructors teach, and ask any questions afterward. There is no cost and no obligation. It is simply the best way to see whether our program fits your child before enrolling.
My child is shy. Will they be okay in class?
Yes. Shy and hesitant children often thrive here. Classes follow a predictable structure, instructors give individual encouragement, and every child progresses at their own pace. Confidence built on the mat, through earned skills and belt promotions, tends to follow kids into school and social settings.
