Stretching for Spring! We're getting set for our Promotion Test on 3/8/14: The Saturday class rocks an Active Warmup sequence to create strong, long, lean, healthy martial artist's muscles. Flexibility in your body/mind creates a physical/mental "safe space" to successfully manage and rise above obstacles, bullies, and other unwanted challenges. Join us for our quarterly essay presentation, on a topic to be assigned on test day, relating to our martial arts practice and good citizenship. We proudly welcome Ada-Louise as a 1st Dan Black Belt to our Black Belt Club! Hear students present their thoughts through written and pictorial essays, as they earn their promotion to their next rank belt.  It is a quarterly highlight at the Dojhang, and a day to share in the growth and achievement of students of all ages. Our week-long Ninja Camp will build conditioning throughout the week, improving agility, strength and awareness through strategic movement games, drills and challenges. This is a dynamic workshop that gives the serious martial artist an entry into the world of Artistic Weaponry.  Our One-Day Weaponry Workshop prerequisite is for students who have previously taken our weaponry camps for 5-days or more. GrandMaster Yu guides you using the E Dan (Twin Sticks) and Nunchauka: making self defense with accessible objects possible, while also learning coordination of blocks and strikes, weapons carriage, and historical background of weaponry training.  As with all of our workshops, GrandMaster Yu will meet each student at their own level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced, and build on the existing skills from previous workshops.  Self defense techniques, forms, and working with a partner all combine to improve coordination, attention, and well-being – plus it is SUPER FUN!  Challenge yourself!

Martial Arts Ninja Camp Lantern Festival: Our annual welcome to the lunar new year! Asian legend tells that if you send a lantern up to the sky at the beginning of the New Year, your wishes gain access to the heavens, and will all come true! We will celebrate these and other legends throughout the day, along with martial arts conditioning, traditional games, challenges, and creating our own original, hand-painted lantern. This camp is appropriate for all levels of children, and is a great introductory martial arts experience, too.

Join Master Wilson for this special Saturday Ninja Camp as we create our Asian/Ninja Themed Terrariums! Terrariums, a small container garden in a jar, are a perfect way to connect with plant life while creating a fun garden scene with favorite rocks & figures. We're thinking this could be a great Mother's Day Gift for Mom! Bring a few of your favorite tiny found objects to include in your terrarium, if you like. Ninja Camp also includes our favorite Martial Arts Games, Conditioning and Kicking to round out a fun and festive afternoon. NinjaCamp promotes the culture, customs, moves, and conditioning for healthy martial arts practice + a special visual art project. A great camp for beginners and all levels, children 5-12. This week is our Annual Kite Festival: design, build and fly an original Asian Kite! Kites have their origin in Martial Arts, from the time of the 3Kingdoms - used as shields, decoys and distractions to invasion of territories, ancient military strategists used kites as part of their battle plans.  We will use ours for the sheer joy of seeing them fly high!!!  Weather permitting, we will head out to a local park on the last day of camp to take a test drive. Launching a Lantern to light the mid-winter sky in the New Year is a traditional Asian custom to let go of old, outdated beliefs and concerns, while raising and lighting our wishes and dreams for a year of good health, achievement, happiness and success.

Campers will enjoy Martial Arts conditioning, games, kicks and stories, and design a lantern to carry their own dreams and wishes.  It is a meaningful and symbolic way to "christen" the New Year with good energy and purpose!

President's Day is CAMP DAY at the Dojhang!  Artistic Weaponry Camp highlights original self-defense sequences and skills developed and tested by GrandMaster Yu using the Twin Sticks and Nunchauka.  For registered students, ages 10+, blue belt and above, it is a great introduction to martial arts weaponry, and will improve your coordination, and range of motion.

NinjaCamp Celebrates the New Year with Martial Arts Conditioning, Games, Challenges, Asian New Year's traditions, and our Annual Calendar Making Party! Learn and expand on your martial arts weaponry skills.  4-consecutive days of training is ideal for beginner weaponry students, which will give you a definite skill set to energize and enrich your martial arts practice. More experienced students will expand their knowledge and sequences through GrandMaster Yu's original programming and choreography. GrandMaster Yu will meet you where you are to solidify skills from previous workshops, as well as introduce the etiquette, form and beauty of the twinsticks and nunchauka.  We practice with durable foam sticks and chucks, available upon registration.  Registration for this workshop is available to current students only, blue belt and above, subject to instructor approval. The Lunar (Chinese) New Year in Asia signals the coming of spring. Join GrandMaster Yu for this extra bit of training as we gear up for the MAIN AirborneKicks in August (Aug 13-17, 2018). This will get your muscles in the Mood for Summer!! We purposely scheduled this right before our evening classes so that you can easily add-on some extra MasterYu training time!  This camp is developed and taught directly by GrandMaster Yu.  Registration is open to students Blue Belt and above, and others with instructor approval.  With your effort, and this training, you WILL be Airborne by the end of the week! Another great Martial Arts Camp for Kids from Master Yu:  we love our Columbus Day NinjaCamp!  Join us for our MASK FESTIVAL!  We will explore the use of masks in martial arts/Asian culture, and create our own Vibrant Mask to use or display. Our other NinjaCamp activities include, of course, lots of Martial Arts Conditioning, a picnic lunch on the mat, games and stories. Trick-or-Treat at the Dojhang! Did you know that Kites have their origin in Martial Arts?  Originally used in battle to distract and deceive the enemy, or confuse attackers into seeing astrological signs, beyond battle, and through the ages people have flown kites for competition, amusement, and delight.   In addition to our martial arts conditioning, we will incorporate stories, legends, and a visual art/construction project to build, design and fly an original Asian Kite. As the project builds through the week, if your child isn't able to take the 5-day camp, minimum 3-day enrollment is encouraged.

About NinjaCamp

NinjaCamp offers martial arts conditioning, games, and skill building for all levels of children, ages 6-12.  Our visual art project is our annual calendar making, incorporating our creativity in paper-cut, design, and seasonal visioning.  Our materials are Japanese papers, stickers, ribbons, and creative coloring. Students will create a calendar they can use and treasure throughout the year.  Minimum 10 students - daily rate available, but we recommend both days to create a calendar and skills to shine the whole year through!

We have had an awesome summer together!  So great to be back together again at the dojhang, and you all have diligently followed every safety protocol.  We recruited 40+ new students who are now actively enjoying their practice; administered a test for our new and returning students, promoted Instructor Merrick to BuSabomNim 3rd Dan, also advanced a new 2nd Dan Black Belt. Other highlights:  Bringing back AirborneKicks Camp, welcoming back many of our collegians, and having our out of town students from Florida, Wisconsin, and Indiana join us for a dynamic week of AirborneKicks Camp. It's Time for our Official November 30-Day Challenge!  Starting November 1st - 30th, we have a special daily challenge for you, and it is so, so EASY and FUN to do together!  It only requires you to commit, discipline and DO every day, and probably takes a maximum of 15 minutes (or less).  It's the commitment, the discipline, and the DOING that will help you PROVE to yourself how strong you can get just by embracing those 3 qualities of commitment, discipline, and doing! Our Trick-or-Treaters got a jump start, but it's not too late for anyone to join the fun!  Here are the details: Remember:  This challenge is for YOU!  It’s YOURS!  Do it and Own it – YOU are in charge! Daily:
  1. 20 Pushups – Optional:  start with regular pushups, and work up to walking pushups by month-end!
  2. Planks – start with 20 seconds, or whatever duration makes you mildly uncomfortable; increase 5 seconds per day through month-end. You will be amazed!!! Try to get to a minute consistently every day.
  3. RoundHouse Kicks – QUALITY! 20 consecutive snaps on each side  - increase by week up to 30 maximum with pull-back each time.
  4. CraneBalance on One Leg: elevate one knee above your belt and elevate your arms in the Crane position – balance 20 seconds each leg – this is your consistent goal by month end.
  5. Last week of Month, or over THANKSGIVING Break: Write an Essay no more than 2 paragraphs, “Why should we make the effort to challenge ourselves?”
  6. Do something for someone every day without being asked!
By December 8th, Submit your essay and a summary of your achievements!  The Winner will take home a medal or other treasured relics and prizes from the Dojhang. Have FUN!  Get STRONG!

About Artistic Weaponry Camp

Accessible to registered students blue belt and above who are looking to expand their martial arts repertoire with beautiful, effective, artistic movement using the TwinSticks and Nunchauka. All forms and choreographed sequences are original, developed and continually enhanced by our founder and teacher, Sr. GrandMaster Yu. Continuous days offer students the ability to develop mind/muscle memory to make the skills their own. It is a beautiful practice offered in a safe and focused environment. Materials required: foam twin sticks and foam/practice nunchauka - if you're new to the practice, we will provide these for an additional fee with your registration. November 2022: 30-day Martial Arts Conditioning Challenge

Commit, Discipline, Do!

This challenge is for YOU!  It’s YOURS!   Own it – YOU are in charge! And it’s totally FREE! You have nothing to lose!

The Daily 100!

  1. 20 Squat Jumps – Squat Low, and Jump!
  2. 20 Pushups
  3. 20 seconds – Wall Sits – Find a clear wall, and sit against it with a flat back, knees bent at 90 degrees.  Start with 20 seconds, and increase a few seconds each day to make it to 1 or 2 minutes (superstar level!) by Nov.30!
  4. Planks – start with 20 seconds, or whatever duration makes you mildly uncomfortable; increase a few seconds per day through month-end. You will be amazed!!! Try to get to a minute consistently every day.
  5. 20 Hip Dips in your plank – while holding your plank, dip your hips from side to side for a total of 20 times.
